FACIAL AESTHETICS

Botox® for Hyperhidrosis

Excessive sweating or ‘hyperhidrosis’ as it is known, is a common problem for many people and can be distressing and have an impact on daily life.
The treatment works by the administration of a number of tiny injections into the underarm area. The Botox reduces the production of sweat by stopping the stimulation of the nerve endings which cause the sweat glands to be active. It does not cause extra sweating elsewhere else and is a very safe and effective cure for this problem. One treatment will generally last between 6-9 months. Once the treatment wears off it can be repeated as often as necessary.

Dr Alison J Brown has found that the effects last longer over time with some patients finding that they can happily go a year between treatments.
The treatment is virtually painless and after the treatment the client can resume daily activities but we do advise you not to go straight to the gym or you could sweat out the Botox before it has had chance to be absorbed by the nerve endings. For the same reason, it is not advised to go straight to a sauna and to avoid underarm shaving for 24 hours.

Dr Alison J Brown advises that you do not use any highly scented shower products or until the next day.

If you think that this treatment may be what you are looking for then please do not hesitate to get in touch with our practice. Alison has helped may people suffering from this condition and she knows how embarrassing and upsetting it can be and she also knows that it is very common problem and that it can be cured or greatly reduced by treatment with Botox.

During your consultation Alison will need to talk to you about your medical history to make sure that the treatment is right for you. If you decide to go ahead she will gently cleanse the area under the arm and make several very tiny, very shallow injections into the area. There is no local anaesthetic used because the injections are so small, they hardly hurt. However, cold packs are available if your skin is particularly sensitive or you are worried that it might hurt.

If you wear a sleeveless vest top or a short sleeved T shirt this will ideal, although we do use towels to cover the chest so that you do not feel uncomfortable. The whole treatment takes about 10-15 minutes and the only side effect that we have found is that you might possibly have a tiny bruise the next day which will quickly disappear.
Clinical studies show a significant reduction in sweating after 4 weeks and our patients have noticed a huge difference in their lifestyle after just 14 days when they find they can wear clothes which they couldn’t before, join in with sports and get on with careers in a way they never could before.
After 3 weeks, you may notice some areas which require a ‘top-up’ if there is still sweating from some glands that may require a little more Botox. Alison will provide a top up if you contact the surgery for a follow-up appointment. There may be a small charge for this depending on the amount of Botox you require.

Men require more Botox for this treatment than women (as the area treated is usually larger) which is why the fee for men is higher.

Dr Alison J Brown welcomes any questions you may have.

Botox is not a permanent cure for hyperhidrosis but it is safe and effective and lasts 6-12 months. It is difficult to be more precise because the outcome does depend on the severity of the sweating but with repeated use, the effects can last longer.
